Situation in Burma, Update May 10, 2008ReferendumPeople of Burma from all over the country, except 47 Townships in Rangoon and Irrawaddy Divisions, were forced to cast their votes in the polling booths today. Voters turn-out is very low and unlike the 1990 elections, most people were not interested in the referendum. They all are devastated by the attack of Cyclone Nargis and want to concentrate their energy to help the cyclone victims, instead of going to the polling booths. In some areas, only 50-60% of the voters turned out and in some areas, there were only 25% of the eligible voters. Community to consider distributing the humanitarian aid by force, as spelled out in the UN Charter on Humanitarian Intervention.
Humanitarian aid may take long to reach the cyclone victims Millions of people in Myanmar have been left homeless by the devastating Cyclone Nargis and piles of bodies have begun rotting in the disaster zone.Andrew Kirkwood, director of the aid agency Save the Children, said on Wednesday that he believed millions had been left homeless although he didn't "know how many millions". Speaking by telephone to the AFP from Yangon, Myanma'r former capital, Kirkwood also said: "There are 41,000 people missing but most people assume most of those 41,000 missing are dead."

Cyclone အၿပီး ေနာက္ဆက္ တြဲမ်ားYANGON, Myanmar - The toll from the cyclone that battered Myanmar last weekend rose above 22,000 dead and 41,000 missing Tuesday as the international community prepared to rush in aid, state radio reported.
A news broadcast on government-run radio said that 22,464 people have now been confirmed dead from Cyclone Nargis, which tore through the country's rice bowl and biggest city of Yangon early Saturday. The broadcast added that 41,000 were still missing, raising fears the death toll would soar. Relief efforts for the stricken area, mostly in the low-lying Irrawaddy River delta, have been difficult, in large part because of the destruction of roads and communications outlets by the storm.
